Origins of Schoolhouse 1931

For more than 20 years, the Elkton Schoolhouse has stood vacant; still grand, yet slowly weathering with the passage of time. For over a decade, our founder carried a vision to rescue this historic landmark from continued decline and restore it to its rightful place at the heart of the community. That vision became reality when Devin Irion purchased the building and founded Schoolhouse 1931.

The plans for the schoolhouse are as ambitious as the structure itself. The long-term vision includes a restored gymnasium, a welcoming community room, a coffee shop, and professional office spaces; all designed to bring new life, purpose, and connection back into the building.

However, after two decades of vacancy, significant work is required. The schoolhouse needs a new roof, windows, flooring in the gym and several classrooms, updated electrical and plumbing systems, new heating and cooling, and numerous repairs throughout the building. While the task is substantial, the foundation remains strong, and restoration is fully within reach.

To help make this vision possible, Schoolhouse 1931 is seeking community support through the purchase of merchandise and memberships. Our goal is to have the majority of the building open by the centennial in 2031, with hopes of opening even sooner through strong financial backing from our community and surrounding areas.

With your support, a once great asset can become an even greater, more relevant gathering place for generations to come. Schoolhouse 1931 will be a place where memories are made and we can’t wait for you to be part of its story!
